Shoulder Exercises

I've already explained in other pages on the site, that golfers do not need to develop herculean sized shoulders to be improve their game.

Just look at the Pro Circuit with the likes of Justin Rose and you'll notice that many golfers do not possess bulky deltoids, yet they can still drive a golf ball further than we can dream off. However, do not think that because players like Justin Rose do not have large shoulders, it means that they are weak.

Muscle strength and muscle size are two very different things!

Lazy Lifestyles

The lifestyles we lead today are getting increasingly sedentary and many of the muscles which we recruit during a golf swing are barely used in everyday life. Sitting at a desk in front of a computer screen all day has the effect of shortening certain muscles and in many cases weakening others – your shoulders being a prime example.

Golfers who rely on playing a few rounds a week to “stay fit and healthy” may very well be in reasonable shape for a casual stroll around a golf course, but by ignoring a number of simple exercises to help stretch and strengthen their all important shoulder muscles (deltoids) they are not only increasing their chances of rotator cuff injuries but also missing out on the opportunity to dramatically improve the control of their swing. As with all golf exercises, they don’t take long to do but the difference they make to you game could be staggering.

The Exercise

Everyone, not just golfers, should rely on a range of different exercises for each muscle group to help provide variation and encourage the muscles to adapt effectively.
The following example of a shoulder exercise is a great demonstration of how to safely perform a strengthening and stretching exercise to help improve your swing. In the coming weeks, I will upload a few more exercises which will help add variety, but in the mean time give this one a go a few times a week.
