Player Profile: Lee Westwood
Profile
Out of all the players on the Pro Circuit, you just know that Lee Westwood would be great company for a night out on the beers.
Lee turned Pro in 1993 after taking to the game relatively late. At 13 he was given his first set of clubs by his grandparents and like other sports he played, he excelled.
Just 2 years after taking up the game, he won the Junior Championship of Nottinghamshire and in 1993 won the British Junior open, after which he turned Pro.
Between a 1993 and 2001, Lee won a string of tournaments including the Benson & Hedges Malaysian Open, Volvo Scandinavian Masters, Holden Australian Open, and the Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters and not forgetting his Ryder Cup appearances.
Following the birth of his first child in 2001, Lee took a bit of time out from the game. His comeback in 2003, after a restructured swing and a renewed vigour, sees him a far better and more consistent player, which continues to go from strength to strength.
Ryder Cup Prospects
Lee goes into the Ryder Cup in the form of his life, after running Tiger incredibly close in the 2008 US Open. Lee finished the tournament in third place, which will hopefully give him the confidence to see that he is now able to take on the world’s best.
Lee’s Ryder cup experience (1997,1999, 2004 and 2006) will be invaluable in the tournament and when you combine this experience with his current form, the Yanks have every justification be quaking in their boots.
Betting wise, Lee is certainly worth a punt. The bookies are unlikely to give him great odds for winning his matches, but when you factor in his current form and Ryder Cup experience, i reckon Lee will do a job for his team.
